Chef Trevis Gleason’s multiple sclerosis diagnosis cost him many things — including his job, his marriage, and his perceived persona — but when he took a step back to survey the ruins of his former life, what he saw instead was the opportunity to fulfill a long-postponed dream; he would travel from Seattle, Washington, to the wilds of west Kerry, Ireland for the winter.

“Multiple sclerosis doesn’t steal away our futures"What he learned during his time there was that his life, the things that he loved (including cooking), and his dreams weren’t lost. Instead, they were waiting to be rediscovered along the narrow, sheep-obstructed roads of the rugged Irish countryside. He soon found himself reveling in the beauty of the land, the authentic joy of the holidays, the conviviality of the local pubs, and the hearty flavor of simple foods.

“Multiple sclerosis doesn’t steal away our futures,” according to Gleason; “it steals what we thought and expected to await us in our futures.” His newly released memoir, Chef Interrupted: Discovering Life’s Second Course in Ireland with Multiple Sclerosis, proves it. This uplifting story (presented alongside a collection of recipes) is full of humor, hope, and inspiration; it is a true must-read.

Chef Trevis is currently in Seattle to promote the release of his memoir. He will be taking part in a number of events organized by the local chapter of the National MS Society, as well as marching in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. If you can’t make it to Seattle, you can buy a copy of Chef Interrupted on Amazon.com, BN.com, or in select bookstores. Or, click here to watch chef Trevis make his traditional Irish soda bread.

Chef Trevis L. Gleason has been an award-winning culinarian, consultant, and instructor as well as a decorated member of the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Goodwill Ambassador to Ukraine. Retired from a distinguished culinary career, Gleason has taken on the challenges of living with secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis since his diagnosis in 2001. He is an ambassador for the National MS Society, an active volunteer for Multiple Sclerosis Ireland and the MS Society of the UK, and speaks to groups, both large and small, about living life fully with or without a chronic illness. Gleason divides his time between Seattle, Washington and County Kerry, Ireland with his wife, Caryn, and their two Irish soft-coated Wheaten terriers, Sadie and Maggie. For more information, visit his website.

In 2012, Dr. Oz of The Dr. Oz Show named Trevis #1 Social HealthMaker on the topic of multiple sclerosis for his Life with MS Blog, Twitter Feed, and other online presence. He was also named the Jimmie Heuga “MS Can Do Person of the Year.”

My mission of spreading awareness about what Multiple Sclerosis is and to live a quality life using the abilities we have is why I was thrilled to receive the following note from Trevis Gleason. Trevis is a man I’ve never met but have known for many years through his stellar reputation in the MS community as an inspiring writer and advocate.

As I read his note I thought about the cadence of its language. I could almost hear Trevis speaking with an American English tongue mixed in with a wee bit of Irish brogue. It was endearing.

Then my next thought was, “Of course I want to give your book a look!” because the life that Trevis chose despite a diagnosis of secondary progressive MS is one that exemplifies what it means to live a quality life despite facing adversity.

Let me go back.Trevis Gleason is a former chef who was trained at The New England Culinary Institute. Settling into a directorial position with the California Culinary Academy and opening several cooking schools for the Academy his life abruptly changed after his misdiagnosed ailments turned into a confirmed diagnosis of MS.

But Trevis’ new book, Chef Interrupted: Discovering Life’s Second Course in Ireland with Multiple Sclerosis is not a book about diagnosis or coming to grips with a “new normal.” Chef Interrupted is a celebration of life and the indomitability of the human spirit, illustrating that lifelong dreams can still be realized with a bit of gritty determination, some serious planning, a positive attitude and the ability to laugh at yourself.

And, of course, being surrounded by loved ones, including the furry kind.

His book begins five years after diagnosis, being forced from the job he was trained for, and a marriage that crumbled.

“If I was to enjoy any of the things I’d hoped to be doing in my far advanced years after a career, I would have to start identifying what those dreams were and create a plan to make them happen. Hope, without a plan, is just a dream.”

Our journey as a reader begins alongside of Trevis, from Seattle to a rented, rustic “functional” cottage in West Kerry, Ireland where he remained for the winter. Despite obstacles such as sheep-obstructed narrow roadways, an antiquated heating system, and the general difficulties of beginning a new life in a strange place, the hearty soul of Trevis remained intact.

His masterful tales are woven around the many connections he makes with the lively people of Ireland, his devoted companion, Sadie, an adorable puppy he adopts upon arrival, and the beauty of the rugged countryside that surrounds him.

Rising to the many physical challenges he inevitably faces, Trevis skillfully entertains a steady flow of family and friends who come to visit him. His skills as a master chef come in handy while entertaining, and he whets our appetites throughout the book when discussing simple local food and drink.

We are willing learners about the cultural differences Trevis embraces, and we feel the joy he feels as he immerses himself in his newest homeland.

When Trevis described some of the people he met I was often reminded of characters portrayed in a few John Ford movies. Flavorful characters that Barry Fitzgerald or Maureen O’Hara might have played. Colorful, lively and always fascinating.

Trevis weaves magic through his poetic style of storytelling allowing us to, at times, forget that he’s living with a debilitating disease, one that catapulted him to visit his family’s roots so far away. His story touched my heart, and I know it will touch yours.

This is not a story about disability but one about finding your joy no matter what life has to offer.

If you’ve ever had a dream you’ll want to take a look at Chef Interrupted. It’ll keep hope in your heart and help you believe that anything is possible.

Chef Interrupted: Discovering Life’s Second Course in Ireland with Multiple Sclerosiswill be released on Amazon on March 1, 2015, but is available for pre-order by clicking here today.

NOTE: I received an advance copy of Chef Interrupted: Discovering Life’s Second Course in Ireland with Multiple Sclerosis. As always, all opinions expressed are solely my own.

Marsha Kramer

TV and theater actress Marsha Kramer, best known for her role as Ed O'Neill's long time assistant Margaret on Modern Family, passed away in January 2020. Her death was confirmed by director Jeff Greenberg, who worked with her on the ABC sitcom. "So sad to hear that my long time friend, Marsha Kramer, passed away yesterday at the age of 74," Greenberg tweeted. "She was so delightful in the 14 episodes she shot as Margaret on Modern Family over the last 7 years, but I'll always remember her soaring aloft as Wendy."

Greenberg was referring to the 1979 Broadway revival of Peter Pan, in which Kramer played Wendy Darling opposite Sandy Duncan in the title role. She appeared in productions of Stepping Out, The Secret Garden, and Showboat, among many others, successfully balancing a career on the stage with supporting roles on the small screen. Kramer popped up in everything from medical dramas (General Hospital) and soaps (Days of Our Lives) to police procedurals (NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service), but sitcoms were her bread and butter.

Modern Family was her most notable screen role, but Kramer also has credits for Malcolm in the Middle, Ally McBeal, and Cheers She also played a talk radio host named Tooty on Frasier. She only physically appeared on screen in two episodes ("Good Grief" and "Sweet Dreams"), but her character was mentioned on several occasions. She is survived by her husband, Jim Keller, and numerous pet cats, including her pride and joy, Dylann.

Saucer separation on a Galaxy-class starship

Saucer separation was an emergency maneuver performed on some Federation starships involving the complete disconnection of the primary hull and the secondary hull. During the 23rd century, separation was a one-time only event used only in a catastrophic emergency the two sections could not reconnect easily following a separation.

In the 24th century, some starship classes were designed to routinely separate into one or more components. The procedure itself became more common and tactical, as well as emergency, uses became standard procedure. By this period, separation technology had advanced sufficiently to be performed at warp speeds. The procedure was extremely risky, with no margin for error partially due to this, a high-warp separation was never attempted prior to 2364.
